In a narrow sense, light is defined as electromagnetic waves visible to the human eye (the visible spectrum). Scientifically, however, the term "light" sometimes refers to the entire electromagnetic spectrum. Among these, Ultraviolet (UV) light ranges from 10nm to 400nm. The term "ultraviolet" combines "ultra-" (meaning "beyond") and "violet," indicating that on the solar spectrum, UV frequency is higher than that of visible light. UV is categorized into UVA (320nm–400nm, long-wave), UVB (280nm–320nm, mid-wave), UVC (100nm–280nm, short-wave), and EUV (10nm–100nm, extreme UV).
Each UV band has a distinct wavelength range, which determines its penetration depth into a substrate. Depending on the material used and the desired curing effect, the appropriate UV type can be selected:
- UVC (Short-wave UV, 200nm–280nm):
It provides powerful output in the 250–260 nm range but does not propagate well in air. Since oxygen can block UVC, many applications involve the use of a nitrogen-purged environment. It is primarily used for top-surface curing to generate surface hardness and abrasion resistance (providing scratch resistance). Common uses include: clear coatings on paper and plastic surfaces; hard coatings for optical and automotive lenses; disinfection and sterilization; DNA cross-linking; and surface modification.
- UVB (Mid-wave UV, 280nm–320nm):
Capable of deep-penetration curing, creating toughness in coatings and adhesives. Common uses include: curing coatings, adhesives, and inks; as well as disinfection and sterilization.
- UVA (Long-wave UV, 320nm–395nm):
Used for curing the deepest layers and providing adhesion. Common uses include: curing inks, coatings, and adhesives; UV inspection; and UV fluorescence.
- UVV (Visible UV, 395nm–455nm):
Used for curing the deepest regions and is responsible for the adhesion properties of these formulations. UVV works well with white and silver conductive pigments. Common uses include: silver conductive inks; titanium dioxide pigment coatings; adhesives and deep potting compounds.
