Photoinitiators are the critical components that absorb light energy to trigger polymerization. Based on their mechanism, they are primarily categorized into two industrial standards:
Free Radical Photoinitiators: The dominant force in the market.
* Type I (Cleavage): Examples include 184 and TPO. These absorb light and directly split to generate radicals. Known for rapid curing and resistance to oxygen inhibition, they are widely used in wood coatings and 3D printing.
* Type II (Hydrogen Abstraction): Examples include Benzophenone and ITX. These require amine synergists and are often utilized in pigmented ink systems.
Cationic Photoinitiators: Primarily used for epoxy systems. They offer unique advantages such as freedom from oxygen inhibition and "dark cure" capabilities, effectively reducing shrinkage stress.
With the rapid adoption of UV LED technology, long-wavelength PIs (like TPO) and macromolecular initiators with low migration properties are becoming the R&D focus to meet strict requirements for food packaging and deep-section curing.
